There wasn’t much sun, but plenty of fun at the inaugural Fun in the Sun 5K in St. Marys on May 23. And after a weeklong deluge in North Florida and South Georgia, the lack of rain was also a definite plus.
Almost 100 runners took part in the new race through historic downtown St. Marys, finishing along the picturesque waterfront. The field included an excellent turnout of Amelia Island Runners, with our own Bill Beaumont scoring a triple play – men’s overall, Masters and age group winner. And it was a battle at the finish with another AIR speedster, Keith Horbatuck, whose time of 20:13 was just one second behind Bill’s, giving Keith an age group win.
Overall women’s winner Kimberly James finished in 24:43, with women’s Masters winner Cathy Cloess crossing the line in 25:53.
In addition to Bill and Keith, several other AIR members also took home awards. Claiming first-place age group wins were John McBrearty and Katie Stanley; 2nd place, Blake Hankwitz, Bill Pennington, Greg Phillips and Josh Stanley; and 3rd place, David Stanley and Shelly Wymer.
Race Director David Schinella said he was pleased with the turnout, especially for a first-time race held at the end of a very rainy week. “We're happy that the weather cooperated, and we’d like to thank everyone who participated, and also our race sponsors,” he said. The 5K was co-sponsored by the Camden County Tribune & Georgian newspaper and Anytime Fitness, part of a community expo that also included a raft race, duck race, food and arts and crafts.

The Mary Lee Clark Elementary School running club was well-represented at the 5K with runners, parents and coaches. The club helps MLC students reach the goal of running a 5K race.
