In addition to our great camp leader, Bill Beaumont, two special guests also provided important information and inspiration for the campers this year.
Jerry Lawson Jerry Lawson, onetime holder of the U.S. marathon record (2:09:35!!), explained the importance of having the right type of running shoe – which depends on your feet, and such things as your biomechanics and your stride.

Jerry is now on the staff of 1st Place Sports in Jacksonville, which for decades has been the go-to place for runners in North Florida. Jerry brought equipment from 1st Place Sports to give each camper an individual analysis, and explained things like pronation, cushioning and stability.

Here's more about 1st Place Sports' 5-Step Fit Process.

Jerry also talked about his racing career, his PR race at the Chicago Marathon and much more.
And Stephanie Strasser, standout runner on the FBHS track and cross country teams, also spent a day with the campers.

Stephanie has already had an amazing career – and she’s still in high school! She’s also the first runner in FBHS history to bring home a state championship in running, when she won the 3200 meters at the FHSAA 2A State Finals in May, in a blazing 11:04.84.

She talked about that race and much more, and also ran with the campers and led them in stretching exercises.
This year’s camp also went high-tech for the first time – we videotaped each runner so they could see their form and also the form of accomplished runners like Bill and Stephanie.

Thanks to all of our campers and instructors!!! And remember, we’re still running – you’re invited to join us in our weekly AIR group runs, starting at 6 p.m. Wednesdays from the parking lot of the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center in Fernandina Beach. Congratulations to all of our 2009 "graduates" -- and happy running!!
